I was at Starbuck’s in downtown Naperville yesterday. Didn’t need to pull out the laptop while I was there, but I know they charge for wifi access.
After leaving Starbucks, I stopped for lunch at BD’s Mongolian BBQ. Free wifi! Yeah, you don’t go to BD’s to drink coffee and read the Sun, but it’s the principle here that counts.
On the way back to my car, I noticed that the Corner Bakery (in the same building as Barnes & Noble, by the parking garage) also has free wifi, and there are probably 50 other spots downtown that do the same. Why on earth would anyone in Naperville pay for it at Starbucks?

Even the Lantern has free wifi, which you could get a clear signal from inside the cafe of Barnes & Noble (where they, too, wanted to charge you for wifi).
The good news now is there’s free wifi EVERYWHERE downtown thanks to the city.
